Extra Spoons and Inspiration

These posts contain little tips and inspiration to help you gain an "extra spoon" or two. Many with invisible illness call themselves "spoonies" in reference to The Spoon Theory by Christine Miserandino. The idea is that we equate our energy levels to spoons, when our energy levels are low, we need spoons. These posts are meant to help you increase your energy (whether mental or physical), and therefore your spoons.

6 things to do before they say yes

There are always going to be times when saying no isn't an option. But, those times are rare. Most of the time it's not clear whether we should say yes or no. When faced with those times, we need to take a few moments and do a few things so that we can have the clarity of mind to determine whether … [Read more...]

Sometimes saying No isn’t an option

Last Updated: January 9, 2017

sometimes saying No isn't an option

Some of us (myself included) have a bad habit of saying yes way too much. We say yes without thinking, without checking our calendar, without really considering if saying yes is really the best thing for us (or even for the person we are saying yes to). The last few months have been a real … [Read more...]

5 Things I'll be making time for this year

I can't believe that yet anther year has passed. This year has been a bit of a roller coaster, but aren't they all.  With so much going on I've really not focused on self-care as much as I should. There are a few things I'd planned to make time for this year but I've found I've not done nearly as … [Read more...]

Do you believe you can feel better?

Last Updated: December 19, 2016

Our thoughts and beliefs affect our health outcomes

The belief that you can make change or perform a behavior has everything to do with whether or not you will actually do it. This belief also has a lot to do with whether or not a particular treatment will work. Simply believing a treatment will work makes up about 30% (or more) of the … [Read more...]

7 ways to decrease stress

I talk a lot about stress here, because it really is a key contributor to how we feel. When we feel more stress, we hurt more, we are more fatigued, we generally feel worse. But, part of the problem with those of us with Fibromyalgia and other other chronic illnesses is that our stress meter is … [Read more...]

Acting healthy takes talent

Last Updated: October 31, 2016

Anyone can fake sick, but faking being well takes talent - sometimes I'm such a good actor that I fool myself.

Those of us who live with chronic pain typically develop amazing acting skills. Our skills are so great that we often fool ourselves into believing the play we are putting on. Certainly those around us have no clue that we are in pain. We smile, we are happy, we laugh and not once do they see us … [Read more...]

It’s time to stop complaining and do something

Last Updated: October 17, 2016

It's time to do something about it.

We all have pet peeves, and today I'm going to talk about one of my biggest ones. There's nothing that drives me mad more than someone who will complain about something but refuse to do something about it. Stop complaining and start doing something about it. I see this throughout life. And, … [Read more...]

Sunday Inspiration: Christine Miserandino

Last Updated: September 25, 2016

I haven't done a Sunday Inspiration post in a long time. I've had to cut back posting as I've just not had enough time to do everything I'd like to. But, this week I think it's important that I write this post. For those who don't know, this entire blog was inspired by Christine Miserandino and … [Read more...]

4 Signs That You Are Doing Too Much

Last Updated: September 5, 2016

Is it time to rest? 4 signs you are doing too much.

Are you doing too much? I've been doing more and more lately, or so it feels like. Maybe I'm not. When I compare to this time last year when I was doing a lot of freelance work, going to school full time, working in lab hours, doing non-profit work, and still blogging, maybe I'm doing … [Read more...]

The Past is the Past, It’s Time to Let Go

Last Updated: August 29, 2016

We all have shit in our lives. It's time to choose whether to stand round and smell it, or plant flowers in it and move on.

We've all gone through crap in our lives. Those of us who live with chronic illness seem to have been handed a bigger pile of crap than most. But, it's what we choose to do with that crap that matters. We can stand around and smell it and let the smell cling to our clothes and our lives, or we can … [Read more...]
