Using Aromatherapy to Create Calm

Essential oils are huge right now. Everywhere you turn you hear about how this oil or that can help this ill or that. And, there’s a reason for all the hype. Essential oils are amazing for many things.

Organic AromasAromatherapy is using those essential oils through scent to set a mood or to help ease a symptom. My first experience with aromatherapy came back in 2008 when I was having severe migraines. One of the many things that was suggested to me during that period was eucalyptus oil. I tried it in roll-on oils that I put directly on my temple, as well as via aromatherapy. I bought eucalyptus branches and put them throughout my house. I actually really love that smell and find it very soothing. I also bought eucalyptus oil and put it in a diffuser by my bed. As much as I enjoyed the scent I didn’t love the diffuser because it was the type that had you burn a candle under a little bowl to diffuse the scent. It worked but it left a mess and dust and dirt clung to the area where the oil sat. Eventually, I gave up on that and just stuck with the branches and with air and linen sprays.

Organic AromasSo, when I was contacted to try a diffuser from Organic Aromas I was intrigued. In talking with Chad I found out that the diffuser doesn’t require a flame, and it doesn’t even really burn the oil. So, no candles and no mess. But, did the reality meet up with the sales pitch?

Organic Aromas sent me their Raindrop Essential Oil Diffuser. When I opened the box I found a gorgeous glass bulb wrapped in a soft felt bag, wooden base, electric cord, and droppers (for cleaning) . The package had very thorough instructions for how to put everything together, but I didn’t really need them (because it was that simple). They also included their Serenity blend oil (how did they know?)

I put everything together and had it working within 5 minutes of the package arriving.

Organic Aromas diffuser operationI’m not totally sure how this diffuser works, but I love that it requires no water or fire. It’s not shooting extra moisture into the air, nor is there a risk of open flame. If you’d really like to know how it works you can read that info on their website. It’s something called the Bernoulli principle. I’m just going to go with, it works.

Our living room is fairly large (and oddly shaped). I put the diffuser as close to the middle of the room as possible and turned it on. Within seconds I could smell the scent of the oil throughout the room.

The diffuser is so quiet you don’t even know it’s operating. If it didn’t diffuse the scent so well I’d have no idea that it was operating (other than the lights).

Organic AromasThe only possible negative on this diffuser is that it also has a light that changes colors. So, if you are extremely photo sensitive it might cause you issues, but when asked about this Chad at Organic Aromas did say that the light could be disabled. It really didn’t bother me and mostly I didn’t even notice it. If it’s on when the room is very dark I would notice it, so I wouldn’t want it on at night in my bedroom. However, while this could be a negative for some, for others it is an added benefit as it could operate in a child’s bedroom as a nightlight while helping them sleep better through the use of aromatherapy.

While these diffusers can be used with other oils, they sent me their Serenity oil blend, which is stated to:

  • Reduce stress and anxiety
  • Treat insomnia
  • Promote relaxation
  • Sooth fussy children
  • Establish balance

I can’t speak for the soothing fussy children but I definitely find that it helps reduce stress and anxiety, promote relaxation and establish balance. The blend is comprised of lime, lavender, cedarwood and organic ylang ylang. None of these are high on my go-to list for scents but I do really like the combination.

Overall I would give this a 5 out of 5 if I was rating it, and I’d definitely recommend it to those who enjoy aromatherapy. And, for those who haven’t given aromatherapy a try yet I’d also recommend it as I think that choosing a good diffuser to start with will really increase your enjoyment and benefit of the essential oils, making it more likely that you will keep using them in the long-term.
