Imua: Keep Moving Forward

Last Updated: January 25, 2015

Welcome! It looks like you might be new here, so I wanted to take a moment to tell you a little about me and my blog. My name is Julie Ryan and I live with Fibromyalgia. I've chosen to live positively, to fight back with diet and lifestyle changes and it's made a huge difference for me. The difference between living all my days in bed, and actually LIVING. I hope you'll keep reading and subscribe to my Newsletter to make sure you don't miss a post. Thanks for visiting!

*BTW, just a heads up that the post below may have affiliate links (some of my posts do).

Welcome back! I'm so glad that you are here again. If you've not already, be sure to subscribe to my Newsletter and I'll update you each time I post (and occasionally I'll send you something special).

the importance of moving forward

I’ve always found The Biggest Loser to be an inspiring show. It inspires me to make healthier choices. I will often watch it while I’m on the treadmill, because I really have a hard time sitting still while that show is on.

I really like the new trainers in the 2015 season – Jessie & Jenn. Jenn made it clear from Day 1 that she was all about changing the contestants from the inside out, and that’s what really stands out to me. It seems like every episode this season has had some major inspirational statement from one of the judges. I tried to write a few down (with the intent of writing a full blog post about each at some point), but then after reading one of my favorite blogs – NoonegetsflowersforChronicPain – where Jessica mentioned her love of the show and some of the same qualities I’ve already mentioned, I thought I would go ahead and share a little inspiration from the Biggest Loser

  • “Your best days are in front of you” – I think this is a belief that we all need to hold onto. It is the cornerstone of HOPE, if we believe our best days are already past then what’s the point of continuing. BUT, if we can hold onto the hope that our best days are still to come, then we can keep moving in that direction and see to it that we don’t miss those best days. I know it’s hard when we hurt so much and when we don’t even have the energy to think about getting out of bed, let alone doing more, but there is still more to this life.
  • Imua – not so much a quote, but an idea that was presented in one of the episodes. It is evidently a Hawaian word that means “move forward”. I’ve actually looked it up and it appears it can mean a variety of things ranging from “forward” to “first”; maybe TBL threw in the “move” maybe not (any Hawaiians wanna help me out with this?). Either way, I like the idea of “move foward” because sometimes it’s so easy to slide backwards, and it can be so hard to move forward. It takes work to move forward, it’s hard, and sometimes it sucks. But, any other direction just isn’t worth the trip. This is a great easy mantra to remember.

This reminds me of something someone shared on my Facebook page when I asked how people respond to the question “How are you?”:

I just don’t feel comfortable telling everyone when they ask how I am…..how I really am that day…..who wants to hear that I’m “itchy, twitchy & bitchy” all in the same day! Now I just respond with “walking forward” because that is what I have to do….quitting is not an option and I’m still working on finding the balance. – Laura

I love that answer “moving forward”.

It’s the truth isn’t it? It’s all we can do some days and it’s what we have to do every day. It also puts a positive, yet honest, frame on the answer of a question we all too often skim over or completely lie in response to.

What reminds you to keep moving forward? Do you have an inspirational quote or phrase that you use to keep you going in the right direction?
