Making My Own Scented Epsom Salts

Last Updated: October 1, 2010

Welcome! It looks like you might be new here, so I wanted to take a moment to tell you a little about me and my blog. My name is Julie Ryan and I live with Fibromyalgia. I've chosen to live positively, to fight back with diet and lifestyle changes and it's made a huge difference for me. The difference between living all my days in bed, and actually LIVING. I hope you'll keep reading and subscribe to my Newsletter to make sure you don't miss a post. Thanks for visiting!

*BTW, just a heads up that the post below may have affiliate links (some of my posts do).

Welcome back! I'm so glad that you are here again. If you've not already, be sure to subscribe to my Newsletter and I'll update you each time I post (and occasionally I'll send you something special).

Just a heads up that the post below may have affiliate links.

So as you’ve already read (a few times by now), my nightly ritual is a bath in Epsom salts, usually with scented epsom salts and bubble bath. Depending on my mood I might do unscented Epsom salts (as I like the scents of my bubble bath and epsom salts to match). The problem with scented Epsom salts is that they are at least twice as expensive as unscented. So, I wondered, couldn’t I make my own? Well yes, I can! And it’s really freakin easy!

Making your own scented epsom salts

All you have to do is….. wait for it….

Add your favorite fragrance of essential oils to Epsom salts. You can do a mix of Epsom salts and Sea Salts if you prefer. I’m going to do a 2/3 Epsom to 1/3 Sea Salts mix. If you like you can also add 1-2 Tsp of baking soda for softer skin. Of course you can add other things like shaved orange peel or lavender petal shavings. I just went to Hobby Lobby and looked at what scents and items they had available for making soaps and picked up a couple of my favorite scents.

So again the ingredients:
4 cups of bath salts (epsom or Epsom & sea salts)
16-20 drops of essential oil fragrance
1-2 tsp baking soda

Mix together in large bowl (or do what I did and just put the ingredients in a large air safe container and shake & mix (I had a couple of air-safe 1lb canisters. I filled one about 3/4 full, shook it up then transferred the contents to the other container. Doing this added air to the mixture making it take up more space in the second container (thus the need to not fill the first one completely full).

I’ve done two different recipes now…. Lavender Orange using dried lavender and orange peel. This not only smells good but looks really pretty. I didn’t add any essential oils to this recipe, just the dried ingrediants.

The second recipe was Eucalyptus Spearmint using the recipe listed above with Eucalyptus oil and Spearmint oil. I used about 10 drops of each type of oil.

Thank you. My nephew loves taking baths and loves scented salts and bubble baths. But he has some eczema that makes certain products bad for him because of additional additives. I’m going to make him some scented salts for Christmas.

    Thank you
That was pretty easy but when things are easy I mess them up sometimes.
